- FUN AND GAME ORGANIZATIONS
-
-
- The category FUN AND GAME ORGANIZATIONS includes many
- of the more interesting computer game system developers and
- commercial products that are currently available. There are few
- VR related games on the market as yet but many are being
- planned.
-
- Word has it, there will be several systems that feature VR
- themes and new human interfaces with which to interact with
- them in the future. Some of the systems listed have potential to
- be used in VR development because of their low-cost and
- relatively good graphics performance while others may not stand
- the test of time.
-
- Video games by their very nature, are real-time systems that are
- capable of outputting graphics information at a pretty good rate.
- The problem is that the game developers have not really seen a
- need to use 3D databases because of the lack of 3D display
- hardware. Although several manufacturers have offered 3D
- glasses that feature shuttered LCD lenses (which can allow a
- game machine to generate stereo pair information), image update
- rate is
- often slow, unexciting primitive 2D depth tricks are used and
- there is way too much flicker (causing eyestrain, headaches and
- nausea).
-
- The use of 3D objects, perspective, scene rotation and
- translation is a tricky design challenge to program on these
- low-end machines and in reality it is governed by the market
- feasibility of how many of those games will sell. If few people
- have 3D glasses (required for the use of these games), then few
- 3D games will ever be developed. Also, poorly designed or cheap
- 3D stereo display interfaces (like glasses) can kill a 3D game with
- poor performance.
- It is a bit of a chicken and egg problem not unlike that suffered
- in the development of high-end VR systems that require
- expensive image generators to produce convincing scene
- transitions.
-
- We believe that this category, as it pertains to VR will grow to be
- one of the most highly populated with organizations and products
- in the future. Please send us information if you feel your work
- should be included in guide revisions.
